Collection: Underpronation and Overpronation

Effective Orthotics for Underpronation (Supination) and Overpronation

While underpronation refers to a high-arched foot and overpronation to a flat foot, symptoms arise from increased strain on muscles, tendons, and ligaments, irrespective of foot shape. Our supportive MODEL P PAIN orthotic insole effectively combats both pronation and supination forces, providing relief from pain and reducing the risk of injury for high and low arch foot types. This is achieved using proven design features such as a rearfoot wedge, 1st cut away, plantar fascial groove and a cuboid notch. Additionally, individuals with high-arched feet may prefer the comfortable feel of the MODEL C COMFORT orthotic.

The Difference Between Underpronation and Overpronation

All feet pronate and supinate. Overpronation occurs when the foot rolls inward too far, leading to the arch flattening, like a soft spring bottoming out. Underpronation happens when the foot lacks mobility and does not roll inward enough, like a hard spring bottoming out early. Both under and over pronated feet (hard or soft spring) can have issues absorbing shock which can lead to pain and injury. The best insoles for under and overpronation should be comfortable and fit easily into your preferred shoe and provide the necessary support to help reduce injuries.

Correcting supination with Insoles for underpronation

Insoles for supination help support the arch and foot and stabilize the foot during the supination stage. The goal for the orthotic insole is to help the foot supinate correctly, reducing strain and the risk of injuries. The best orthotic insoles for underpronation have proven design features like a rearfoot wedge, plantar fascial groove and a 1st cut away to facilitate the foots natural biomechanics, called the windlass mechanism, to support supination. The Interpod MODEL P PAIN orthotic has clinically proven design features to assist supination.

Underpronation and Overpronation FAQs

What is pronation?

As the foot strikes the ground during walking or running, it naturally rolls inward to absorb the impact. This occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and elongates. To resist arch flattening and absorb the impact of each step, large muscles in the leg insert tendons into the arch of the foot. This helps to reduce the stress on the foot and leg, preventing injury and improving performance.

How can insoles help with overpronation?

At the start of each step the leg is moving forward as the foot hits the ground and begins to roll inward. When the leg is directly vertical over the foot, the foot should stop rolling inward (pronating). However, if the foot continues to roll inward this is called overpronation. These people usually have a flat arch foot. With under pronation the foot stops pronating before the leg is over the foot. The foot then begins to roll outward (supinate) earlier than it should. These people usually have a ‘high’ arched foot.

How Can Insoles Help with Underpronation?

Medical grade orthotic insoles are designed to help the foot to absorb the impact of each step. They reduce pronation and assist supination by incorporating features like a rearfoot wedge, plantar fascia groove, 1st cutaway, and cuboid notch. Using orthotic insoles with these design features can help the foot to absorb shock, reducing the impact of each step and minimising the risk of injury.

In summary, finding the best insoles for underpronation and overpronation is essential for maintaining healthy feet and avoiding injuries. The insoles you choose should be comfortable and provide the necessary support during pronation and supination. The Interpod MODEL P and MODEL C are excellent orthotics. Whether you have flat or high-arched feet, the right orthotic insoles can help you achieve better foot health and improve your overall performance.
