Shin pain, commonly known as shin splints or medial tibial stress syndrome, often arises from repetitive stress, overuse in running or sports, flat feet, or improper footwear. Symptoms include tenderness along the inner shinbone, swelling, and aching that worsens with activity. Diagnosis may involve physical exams, bone scans, or MRI to rule out stress fractures or compartment syndrome. Treatment focuses on rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), along with anti-inflammatory medications and gradual return to activity. Orthotics play a key role by correcting biomechanical issues like overpronation, providing arch support, and absorbing shock to alleviate pressure on the tibia and prevent recurrence. Strengthening exercises for calves and shins can further aid recovery.
